Common Operations

In this chapter the most commonly used operations required to create a map configuration file with MapManager are listed. The process of creating the MapFile involves the execution of the following common steps:

1. Create a New Map or Open an existing MapFile - The first step of configuring MapFiles is to create a new map or open an existing MapFile. For more information about these steps see Working With Map Files.
2. Adding or Removing Layers, Changing the Layer Order - By creating a new map no layers are added by default. The next step is to add new layers to the map, remove existing layers or change the layer drawing order. MapManager provides custom dialogues for adding WMS layers and MS SQL Spatial layers.
3. Changing the Map Extent - You can change the map extent and zoom to the area in the Map Window of interest before setting up the symbology and labelling options.
4. Setting up the Style and Symbology - You can set up the style and the symbols select each layer class or style in the layer panel and display the the corresponding Property Editor to alter the rendering behaviour of the layers.
5. Setting up the Annotation and select features - You can select one or more layers and set up annotations for the features by using the Label Property Editor for each classes. You might want to inspect the attributes by selecting one or more features during the labelling process.
6. Using Scale Dependent Rendering - Some of the layers may not be properly rendered at every scale. The layer may contain a high number of indistinguishable features when the extent is large and you may want to set up scale dependent rendering of those layers. You may also want to set up scale dependent symbol and label sizes.
7. Saving the Map Image - As the final step of the map configuration you might want to save the map configuration to file or save the map image file for further use.
